JAW REDUCTION
& BRUIXISM TREATMENT

Non surgical jaw reduction is an effective procedure to slim down the lower face without surgery.
Non surgical jaw reduction treatment using injectables has revolutionised cosmetic sculpting of the lower face. It has bypassed the need for surgery, prolonged recovery times and possibly asymmetrical results. At Dr Aguilar’s Clinic, patient safety is the priority. We use only injectables approved by FDA and in the UK, and all treatments are performed by Dr Aguilar (GMC/BCAM registered ) who is highly experienced.
IS THIS A TOXIN?
The active ingredient of jaw-injection was first discovered when it was produced by bacteria that grew in food that was not well preserved. Since then it has been purified and has a wide range of uses in the medical field. The dose used in cosmetic procedures is minimal and has no effect on the rest of the body. Anti-wrinkle injections is consider to be a safe procedure which is used worldwide for both medical and cosmetic purposes. It is recognised as a medicine and is used widely in the NHS to treat medical issues such as irritable bladder, muscle contracture and spasms in much higher doses than we use it for aesthetic purposes.
OVER-ACTIVITY OF THE JAW MUSCLE (MASSETER) CAN LEAD TO SQUARE LOOKING JAW LINE. THIS CAN BE AN ATTRACTIVE CHARACTERISTIC IN MALES, HOWEVER IN FEMALES A MORE OVAL AND SOFTER FACE SHAPE IS OFTEN DESIRED. CAUSES OF OVERUSE OF THE JAW MUSCLES INCLUDE A CONDITION CALLED BRUIXISM (GRINDING OF THE TEETH AT NIGHT) OR EXCESSIVE CHEWING OF GUM, BOTH LEAD TO THE MUSCLES BECOMING ENLARGED WHICH CAN MAKE THE JAW APPEAR WIDE.
WHAT IS BRUXISM?
Bruxism is a condition where a person grinds, clenches, or gnashes their teeth. It can occur when awake or asleep. Bruxism can effect people of all ages and can occur when awake or during sleeping hours.
Bruxism typically leads to mild symptoms which do not require intervention. However, severe bruxism can cause damage to teeth as well as jaw issues and headaches. In severe cases, it is important to be aware of the symptoms and ensure regular visits to dental professionals for review.
This treatment targets the masseter muscles responsible for grinding teeth, relaxing these muscles to reduce the intensity and frequency of grinding. All treatments are performed by our highly experienced and qualified medical practitioner Dr Aguilar.
WHAT IS THE MASSETER MUSCLE?
The masseter muscle is located on each side of your jaw and is one of the main muscles involved with chewing. When someone chews or grinds their teeth too often, the masseter muscles can increase in size and cause issues with the shape of your face.
There most common reasons for increased size of the masseter muscles are:
-
Genetics
-
Ethnicity, with many patients from Asia having increased masseter muscles.
-
Clenching (bruxism), particularly at night
-
Grinding
-
Excessive chewing
-
Chewing on only one side of the mouth
-
Anxiety
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
Following the initial treatment, results are visible for 3 to 4 months. In order to maintain the results, further treatments will be required. Following further treatments, results will last between 6 to 9 months. Further sessions will be required to maintain results.
HOW DO JAW INJECTIONS IMPACT THE SHAPE OF THE JAW?
This treatment provides a more streamlined appearance to the lower face, offering a more balanced and proportional appearance. .
For men:
In some men, a hypertrophy of the elevating muscles of the mandible and masseter muscles creates a jaw shape which is unusually square and disproportionate the the rest of the face.
For women: In a woman’s face, the jaw usually draws a softer curve. If the natural jaw shape is too angular, it can give a masculine appearance. The aim is always to offer a reshape which is in proportion with the natural lines of the face and meets the desired shape of each individual patient.
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE INVOLVE?
The procedure involves 3 to 6 painless injections in to the masseter muscle on each side of the face. Over the next few days this causes a weakening of the jaw muscle and therefore an overall reduction size. The procedure is simple and takes only 5-10 minutes. Results can be visible within 2 weeks.
HOW IS THE RECOVERY?
The procedure is swift, taking approximately 10 minutes to complete. There is minimal discomfort and no significant downtime following treatment. Patients are advised to refrain from rubbing the treated area for at least 24 hours and to avoid painkillers, alcohol. prolonged periods of laying down or vigorous exercise on the day of treatment.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR JAW REDUCTION?
The best candidate for this procedure would be one who has a wide jaw due to an over developed masseter muscle usually due to overuse of the muscle. This treatment also helps to address patients with Bruxism and to reduce long term damage to teeth.
