Intralipotherapy with AQUALYX®
is a treatment to sculpt the body. It is not a treatment to lose weight but to shape those areas of unwanted fat that are resistant to diet and exercise or are related to estrogen activity, such as the hips in some women.
Aqualyx® is a fat dissolving treatment designed to permanently reduce stubborn pockets of fat. Aqualyx® fat dissolving injections are an effective and safe option to permanently remove fat and reshape the body. Dr. Aguilar is a qualified doctor trained to perform this treatment and with 10 years experience using Aqualyx® to sculpt the face and body. In addition, Dr Aguilar has conducted internationally published research in the use of Aqualyx®, winning the Best Investigation Award from BCAM.
WHAT IS AQUALYX?
AQUALYX® is an alternative to liposuction for patients that are not interested in surgery. It is a permanent treatment which causes the destruction on fat cells in the place of infiltration. This treatment can be performed in almost any area of excess fat, to shape the body. However the most common areas are hips, abdomen, buttocks and the so called love handles, arms, back or inner legs.
The treatment works best in small areas, and more than one session is usually required, depending of the desired result. There is usually a gap of 3 to 4 weeks between sessions. Following treatment you may experience some bruising and swelling to the treated area, this is temporary and usually lasts only a few days. It is not a painful treatment and involves the use of a local anaesthetic.
A consultation is required to establish which areas can be treated, and to give you an idea how many sessions will be required to complete your course.

You pay close attention to a wholesome lifestyle by exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet, yet that one pad of fat that troubles you most will not disappear. The cause of this problem lies within our genes and the special structure of our fat cells in certain areas. Fat cells located in the subcutaneous fat tissue are difficult to diminish, as only their contents and overall volume can be altered, but not the fat cells themselves. These particular fat cells cannot be reduced and continuously serve as a deposit for the body to store fat.
Other pockets of fat may prove be harder to remove through diets and exercise. These areas include the lower back, upper back, stomach, and under arm fat.
Aqualyx® has proven to be effective in treating all of these areas.
WHO CAN AND CAN'T HAVE AQUALYX® TREATMENT?
If you are in generally good health and don’t have any skin diseases or infections in the treated area, Aqualyx fat dissolving injections are a safe treatment. However, Aqualyx® is not recommended for;
-Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
-People who have been diagnosed with lipodystrophy.
-People who are immunocompromised for any reason, including type 1 diabetes.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
Aqualyx® fat dissolving injections is a non-surgical treatment. The treatment does not require incisions or stitches. Therefore, there are no general anaesthetic risks and scarring is very unlikely. Patients typically experience minimal side effects when compared to more invasive procedures, such as liposuction. There is likely to be swelling, bruising and tenderness in the treated area. This typically last approximately 7 days after treatment.
It is advisable to consider social engagements or work commitments following treatment as the swelling may initially be quite pronounced.
To date, no major side effects of Aqualyx® use have been reported to the manufacturer.
HOW DOES AQUALYX® WORK?
Aqualyx® contains deoxycholic acid. The fat dissolving effect locks on to the fat cell walls and starts to operate, resulting in the cell wall becoming unstable and releasing the fatty acid that is stored within. Cell residue is removed by the body’s defences and the non attached fatty acids are metabolized and converted into energy.
WHAT DOES HAVING AQUALYX® FAT DISSOLVING INJECTIONS INVOLVE?
Dr Aguilar will provide a free consultation to discuss your expectations and evaluate your suitability for treatment. During the consultation, Dr Aguilar will explain the procedure, expectations, after care and any possible complications. Prior to injection, the area to be treated is marked out. The Aqualyx® solution is mixed with lidocaine (an anaesthetic) before injection for your comfort.
The intralipotherapy technique will then be administered to ensure that the fat in the target area is removed. Following treatment, Dr Aguilar will apply massage to the treatment areas and you will have to continue this massage at home for several days after your treatment. You will experience swelling and tenderness in the treated area and there may be some temporary bruising. The area injected will feel tender for 3-5 days and appear swollen for 7-10 days. This timescale varies between patients.
A minimum of 2 treatments is required to achieve the desired results. Typically, 2-3 sessions is sufficient. However, depending on the amount of fat to be removed and the patient response to treatment it can take more than 3 sessions.
HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?
This treatment offers permanent results and, once the desired result has been obtained, there is no need to repeat treatment. To ensure that desired results are maintained and for general health reasons, patients are advised to eat healthily and maintain weight following treatment.
