What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition where there is excessive sweating caused by overactive sweat glands. People with hyperhidrosis may sweat even when it is cool or they are at rest. Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can affect the entire body or just certain areas, particularly palms, soles, underarms or face.. If you sweat often and excessively and this impacts negatively on your everyday daily life, you may have hyperhidrosis. Impacts of hyperhidrosis can include: - The need to shower and change clothes frequently. - Avoiding physical contact with others. - Difficulty performing work duties such as operating machinery, using tools or typing. - Avoiding social situations and becoming increasingly isolated and self conscious about sweating. - Avoiding physical activity through fear of excessive sweating. BOTULINUM TOXIN (BOTOX) IS APPROVED BY FDA TO BE USED IN THE TREATMENT OF EXCESSIVE SWEATING. SMALL DOSES OF THIS PURIFIED SUBSTANCE ARE INJECTED INTO THE AREA WHICH TEMPORARILY BLOCK THE NERVES THAT STIMULATES SWEATING.
What to expect during the procedure?
The Botulinum Toxin is injected into the targeted area to block nerve activity which triggers the sweat glands. This significantly reduces the onset of sweating. The treatment is safe with only minor side effects. Patients can expect to experience a reduction in sweating within a few days of treatment and the treatment is effective for approximately six months. Prior to treatment, a numbing cream may be applied to the area being treated to reduce discomfort. The Botulinum Toxin is then introduced via a series of injections to the treated area. The procedure is swift and does not lead to significant down time following the procedure.
What causes Excessive sweating?
Primary (focal) hyperhidrosis is the most common type and has no obvious cause It is linked to the part of the nervous system which controls sweating. Primary hyperhidrosis typically effects specific areas such as hands, feet, underams and face and is generally found in individuals under 25 years of age. Secondary (generalised) hyperhidrosis does have an identifiable cause and is often the result of a medical condition or a side effect of medicine. Factors which may lead to secondary hyperhidrosis include: - pregnancy or the menopause - anxiety - side effects of certain medications - low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) - an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) infections.
