Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK and must only be prescribed and administered by registered healthcare professionals with prescribing privileges following a face-to-face consultation.[3] Despite this, it remains one of the few high-income nations where non-healthcare professionals can legally administer botulinum toxin with minimal oversight. Research by Anglia Ruskin University found serious gaps in the system, patients not always offered advice or given consent forms before undergoing anti-wrinkle treatment.[2]
The lower price at a beauty salon reflects, in part, lower overhead and less qualified practitioners. Botulinum toxin at a beauty salon may or may not be a licensed product, unlicensed products are sold online and have been associated with serious permanent complications including scarring and disfigurement. A beauty therapist is not trained to recognise or manage a ptosis, an asymmetry, or a Harlequin deformity. A GMC registered doctor is. The cost difference between a medical clinic and a beauty salon is not a reason to choose the salon. It is a reason to understand what you are giving up.[1]
